As for the secure - I inherited this - doesn't need to be secure - so I'll pull that

How are you logging? a verbose log will show all the properties and when they change.
Use l*v filename from the command line or look here to enable via the registry.

Note @Secure on the property element does not obscure the password, that is the function of the @Hidden attribute. Secure passes the value between the client and server processes.

I am not clear what your problem is? You marked the properties secure so the value will be obscured. I see not merit for that given what the value points to and you weren't clear as to what to problem is, but if it's that the value is all asterisks then you now know what to do...
