The binder uses MsiGetFileVersion to get file version and language info from the versioninfo resource. If it doesn't return an error code, WiX doesn't complain.

Subject: [wix-users] DLL with invalid version sets File/@Version to

I noticed that when a managed DLL contains an invalid AssemblyFileVersion attribute, the Version column in the File table reverts this to
For example, I had a file that was set to something like "" 5 parts instead of 4 and the 4th part is outside the uint16 range.

Is this expected, or should the linker or maybe even an ICE call out the version as a warning?
