I believe you can, but it's a little tricky.  Also, I'm not an expert, so this may violate "best practices".  I define a temporary directory for my installed product's work files.  I create a Directory element under the TARGETDIR element, and then override the path using a CA that prompts the user (with appropriate validation).  In any case, I believe you can override with a SetProperty element to set a property with the same Id as the Directory element.

Note that it's been a while since I developed this and while I vaguely remember using the SetProperty element during testing, I'm not absolutely sure about that.

Can't I define an independent Directory element inside a separate fragment or component? If I do that, I get an error saying "The directory with the Id 'TestDir' is not a valid root directory. There may only be a single root directory per product or module and it's Id attribute value must be TARGETDIR and it's Name attribute value must be SourceDir. " Sorry for asking such a silly question, but I am new to WiX, so, please forgive me. I am a newbie and a learner and could use all the help. Hence, please help.
