If you can reproduce the problem on a test PC then you can test if signing is the issue without buying a certificate. You can generate a self-signed certificate using MakeCert and sign the MSI and bundle with it. Then you install that certificate to the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" on your test PC to force it to be trusted and run your installer to see if it is fixed. If you search online you will find several Microsoft pages with instructions for test signing. There are a number of ways to go about it.

Regardless of the outcome if your bundle and/or MSI are not properly signed you will likely have other problems eventually. You need either a Standard (aka Microsoft Authenticode) or Extended Validation (EV) Code Signing Certificate. There are several vendors and prices vary from one to the next. Highly recommend the EV if you are going to be offering your burn bundle as a download. Microsoft SmartScreen likes to flag executable installers downloaded via IE or Edge that are not signed with EV certificates as suspect or corrupt. The downsides to the EV certificate though is it is more expensive, requires more through vetting and it resides on a USB key that you must have with you anytime you need to sign something.

Hi,

i'm sorry for the stupid question, obviously I found information needed by myself. Do you think that this issue can be solved simply signing the msi?
What kind of certificate I need to do it?

Is it possible to increase verbosity of wix installation log?

Thanks a lot
Daniele Buffa.

Yes, there is but it's a common scenario, I cannot tell customers to disable their antivirus, it would be better an antivirus-compatible burn package...
