I don't think that the later will even work in MSBuild. 'some tasks' needs to be under a MSBuild 'Target' and not a child of a PropertyGroup. However a PropertyGroup can be a child of Target. I think BeforeBuild is VS specific Target, however you can confirm all of this by enabling Verbose logging of MSBuild output prior to build your project. In VS use Tools\Options\Projects and Solutions\Buld and Run to set the output verbosity.
