Answered my own question. Setup.exe is needed to elevate rights to admin. By launching the MSI as admin via a registry hack<http://www.howtogeek.com/178826/how-to-force-an-msi-package-to-install-using-administrator-mode/>, it will install everything properly.

Subject: [wix-users] Single MSI with no setup.exe?

Hard to know exactly who to ask about this, since there are two toolsets involved. So I'll ask about the Wix side here:

I have a .NET project using a 3rd party tool called Add-In Express. It simplifies creation of MS Office Add-Ins. Add-in Express has a wizard which will build either an Installshield or Wix project to setup the addin.

It works great, but it creates a setup.exe as well as the MSI. Our company policy is to use only MSIs. The MSI it creates CAN be launched on its own, but it doesn't actually register the product with (in this case) Outlook. It will, however, with the setup.exe.

I'm not an MSI expert (obviously), so I'm confused about what the setup.exe does, and if there's a way to fold it into the MSI.

Thanks for any info.
